A rental car can give a Fiji itinerary flexibility, but not every holiday needs one for the entire stay. If most of your time is at one resort with a few organised outings, transfers or a driver may fit your plans better.
Tourism Fiji lists both rental vehicles and pre-arranged land transport options. Our advice is to choose your transport after sketching the days when you will actually use it.
Choose a car for the days you want to explore
List the places you hope to visit, then ask the rental provider whether the planned roads are allowed under the agreement. Check licence requirements, driver eligibility, the bond, fuel policy and return arrangements directly with that provider.
Look at luggage space as well as passenger capacity. If you are collecting a vehicle straight after a flight, consider whether everyone will be comfortable starting the drive then or whether a transfer and later pickup would make the day easier.
Choose a driver when the journey is part of the service
A driver can be useful when you want someone else to manage the route and pickup arrangements. Ask whether the quote is for transport only or also includes guiding, waiting, admissions and meals.
Be specific about the proposed stops and hours. A hotel transfer is not the same product as a vehicle and driver available throughout a sightseeing day, so compare the written inclusions rather than the headline amount.
Compare the full cost
For a rental, add the charges that apply to your particular booking, including any additional driver, child-seat or one-way return fees. Ask what the insurance terms mean for the route you intend to take. For a driver, confirm waiting and extra-stop charges before agreeing to changes.
At handover, record the vehicle's condition with the provider and keep the agreed fuel level and return instructions. This is practical housekeeping that makes the end of the trip simpler.
