About this experience
The boat leaves the Natadola jetty at five, and for half an hour you wind down a mangrove river with the light going gold on the water. Then the island. You are welcomed with kava — your guide will show you how to clap, take the bilo and clap again — and while you settle in, dinner is coming out of the lovo, the earth oven, where it has been cooking under hot stones and banana leaves all afternoon. After dark, the fire pit. Firewalking, vilavilairevo, belongs to the Sawau people of Beqa Island, who have held the right to it for around five hundred years, and it is not a trick. Watch from behind the line and let them concentrate. The Legends of the Pacific show and a bonfire with a string band see out the night. You will be back late. It is worth it.
