Fiji's reefs are a reason to travel, and the way we visit them matters. Tourism Fiji's water guidance advises keeping clear of coral and avoiding contact with marine animals. Those simple principles apply whether you are snorkelling from a boat or joining a guided dive.
A considerate reef visit starts before anyone gets wet. Choose an outing that suits your experience, tell the operator about your confidence in the water and listen carefully to the briefing for that particular location.
Sort out equipment before reaching the reef
Ask for help with an unfamiliar mask, fins or flotation equipment before you enter. If something does not fit or you do not understand how to use it, say so. It is easier to solve the problem with the guide than while trying to keep up with a group.
Our practical suggestion is to keep photography secondary on a first outing. Being comfortable and aware of the people and habitat around you matters more than collecting a close-up image.
Leave space around coral and wildlife
Follow the guide's route and instructions about where to enter, exit and pause. Do not stand on coral, collect pieces or handle animals for a photograph. If you need assistance or a rest, signal the guide instead of improvising a place to put your feet.
Let wildlife move freely. An encounter is still worthwhile when you watch from a respectful distance, and a tour description should not be read as a guarantee that a particular animal will appear.
Ask what responsible operation looks like
Before reserving, ask how the operator briefs guests, chooses sites and handles changing conditions. Look for clear explanations rather than relying on an environmental slogan. Find out how rubbish and personal belongings are managed during the outing, and bring back everything you take with you.
Different sites and activities suit different people. A dive photograph does not mean a snorkelling excursion reaches the same depth or offers the same view.
