Fiji's famous surf images can make a first lesson look intimidating. You do not need to begin with the waves you have seen in competition footage. Tourism Fiji identifies beginner surf opportunities and points travellers towards surf operators who can help choose an appropriate place to learn.
The useful starting point is a coached lesson matched to your ability. Tell the instructor if you have never surfed, have tried once or can already catch small waves. Those are different starting points, even when everyone calls themselves a beginner.
Ask how the location is chosen
A suitable learning spot depends on conditions as well as your experience. Ask the operator how they decide where the lesson takes place and what happens if the conditions are unsuitable. Avoid insisting on a famous break simply because it is on your wish list.
Explain your swimming confidence and any concerns before booking. The instructor can then tell you what participation requirements apply and whether the session is appropriate.
Compare instruction, not just time on the itinerary
Ask how many guests will share the instructor, what the lesson includes and whether equipment is provided. Confirm whether the advertised duration is the lesson itself or the entire outing, including transport and preparation.
For children, provide ages and ask about the operator's specific requirements. A family booking does not automatically mean one lesson format will suit every person.
Leave room for the first-time experience
Our suggestion is to avoid scheduling another demanding activity immediately afterwards. Give yourself time to change, eat and talk about how the session went. Success on a first lesson might be understanding the board and following the instructor's cues; it need not be a perfect ride for the camera.
Bring only what the operator recommends and check how personal items are stored during the session. Confirm your pickup and the return arrangements before departure.
