Pack light — Fiji is casual almost everywhere.

  • Reef-safe sunscreen. The sun is stronger than most visitors expect, and reef-safe formulas protect the coral you came to see.
  • Rash vest or light long sleeves for snorkelling. Far better than reapplying sunscreen all day.
  • Water shoes for rocky entries and reef flats.
  • A light rain layer, whatever the season.
  • Insect repellent for evenings.
  • Cash in small notes for village visits, markets and tipping.

Visiting a village

Fijian villages are respectful places. Cover your shoulders and knees, and remove hats and sunglasses when you enter — hats are considered disrespectful in a village setting. A small gift of kava for the host is a traditional courtesy.
